Healthy Airway Programme1.0

Background

The Centre is very concerned about the respiratory health of young children. Therefore, we joined hands with the District Health Centre Express of Shatin, Kowloon City and Yau Tsim Mong and the Hong Kong Asthma Society to promote the Healthy Airway Programme in the academic year of 2022. The programme aims to identify children with undiagnosed asthmatic symptoms and understand the relationship between respiratory health and growth environment with the joint power of community, education and health sectors. Early identification of asthma or respiratory health problems can help children better manage their situation as early as possible. In this way, the children can participate in physical activity as usual and develop a positive lifestyle with early intervention. If potential asthmatic children can get support from their peers, teachers and family members, they may have a reduced chance of developing the disease and be able to resume daily activities more quickly.

This programme provides teacher training, health activities for children, parents workshops, referrals for following up on asthmatic symptoms etc. Schools will develop the "School Asthma Action Plan" by the end of the programme and will become an asthma-friendly school. Nine kindergartens and six primary schools have participated in the programme. Potential asthmatic children can be identified through screening, and teachers' confidence in caring for children with asthma can also be enhanced. The children's health activity will cover the knowledge of maintaining respiratory health through our teaching materials and educational videos. A positive attitude towards children with asthma symptoms or allergies will also be enhanced.
