Topic 6 Family and Interpersonal Relationships

Why should teenagers learn to maintain a good family life and relationships?

Good interpersonal relationships can serve as a supporting network for young people that enables them to better cope with life challenges. If teenagers do not receive sufficient support from parent-child or interpersonal relationships, they may struggle to cope with life challenges or handle them inappropriately. Making sense of identity in healthy interpersonal relationships constructs the entire essence of oneself and helps build personal values and life goals. Furthermore, establishing healthy interpersonal relationships in adolescence will help develop a healthy love relationship with the partner in the future. Therefore, it is an indispensable part of teenagers' healthy growth and development. They should be encouraged to spend energy and patience communicating with others and maintain a good family life and interpersonal relationships.

Main concepts

  1. Let teenagers understand the importance of communication in establishing and maintaining family and international relationships. It also helps teenagers understand that conflicts are inevitable when getting along with others. The important thing is how to deal with them through effective communication.
  2. By practising practical communication skills and cultivating positive attitudes (such as active listening, assertiveness, verbal and non-verbal communication, integrity, etc.), young people will be able to face conflicts they may encounter with their parents and friends. Many traits in humanity can help relationships develop healthily and sufficiently, such as loyalty, intimacy, sincerity, understanding, etc., while other skills and individual characteristics may also help promote interpersonal relationships. Teachers can help develop students' attitudes, skills and personal traits according to students' needs.
  3. Let teenagers understand that interpersonal relationships are an essential part of healthy growth. Establishing close and meaningful relationships with others is a basic human need. Friends play an indispensable role in the development and identity of teenagers. Those with close friends often have a higher sense of self-worth and self-esteem.
  4. Let teenagers realise that the experiences they gained from getting along with their family and friends and the attitude and skills they applied may also help cultivate a healthy relationship with their partner. Let them not ignore the opportunity around them to practise practical communication skills but cherish every interpersonal relationship.
  5. By explaining communication skills and learning them from role-play, teachers can help students master them. Without enough practice when dealing with interpersonal issues, young people tend to stick to the usual ways of response that they are used to rather than using alternative methods that can be more effective. Role-playing and scenario-based discussion provide practice opportunities for students to prepare for various social situations, perhaps problems, and improve their ability to communicate confidently.
