Topic 9 Disease Prevention

Why should teenagers be taught about disease prevention?

Many serious diseases are preventable. These diseases can be delayed or prevented if teenagers develop healthy living habits and improve related behavioural factors at an earlier stage. Young people should understand the transmission of infectious diseases, the immune system, common chronic non-communicable diseases and allergic diseases and explore their impact on health. Thereby, students can understand the principles of disease prevention and reflect on the saying that prevention is better than cure.

Main Concepts

  1. Let young people understand the transmission routes of infectious diseases, the importance of maintaining personal and environmental hygiene to prevent infectious diseases, and practice various personal hygiene habits in their daily lives.
  2. Let teenagers have a basic understanding of the immune system and understand how to maintain a healthy immune system, including vaccination.
  3. To provide young people with a basic understanding of common chronic non-communicable diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, and to explore the impact of obesity and overweight on health. Let teenagers understand that by refusing tobacco and alcohol, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, controlling weight, controlling blood pressure, etc., chronic non-communicable diseases are preventable.
  4. Let teenagers understand common allergic diseases, such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis (eczema), etc., and know that patients with these illnesses have adverse reactions due to allergens or triggering factors. The condition varies from person to person.
  5. Let teenagers reflect on the wisdom that prevention is better than cure. They should know the role of doctors in diagnosing and treating diseases and providing preventive services. Teenagers also learn that various technologies are available to assist medical professionals in analysing the condition's causes and seriousness. Medications can help control specific conditions and help patients live an everyday life.
  6. Diseases and illnesses may seem far from healthy teenagers, making them not fully understand the importance of preventing diseases and maintaining hygiene habits. Teachers can use different channels (such as videos, movies, interviews, visits, etc.) to help students understand these conditions and their impacts or use various activities to interest students in disease prevention topics.
