22 Mar Understanding Chronic Kidney Disease: Prevention, Management, and Healthy Living

This lecture aims to enhance the public’s understanding of kidney disease. We are honored to invite Dr. Wing-shing Fung (Specialist in Nephrology and Associate Consultant, Prince of Wales Hospital) to lead the public in discussing the importance of preventing and managing kidney disease while providing practical healthy living advice. The seminar, co-hosted by the Centre and the Shatin District Health Centre, attracted more than 70 participants. It provided an overview of common kidney diseases, including chronic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, and hypertensive nephropathy. Additionally, the seminar covered the basic functions of the kidneys and emphasized their significance in the body. The seminar examines the various risk factors that impact kidney health, including hypertension, diabetes, genetic predispositions, and unhealthy lifestyle choices. It offers dietary recommendations, highlighting the significance of a low-salt, low-protein, and high-fiber diet, along with an increased intake of fruits and vegetables. Attendees are advised to engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise weekly and to undergo regular kidney function assessments. Dr. Fung Wing-shing participated, and attendees raised many questions covering diet, exercise, and frequency of check-ups. The speaker answered them one by one, enhancing everyone's understanding. The lecture emphasizes the importance of kidney disease prevention and management while providing practical advice on healthy living. It is hoped that participants will be able to apply what they have learned daily and actively maintain kidney health.
